Impact and Ethics of IT in the Workplace
This blog is for the IT manager group who have been using computers and have a lot of experience of using IT, to discuss about the impact of IT and effects of IT in the workplace. For example the impact of IT and society, the effects of IT with the economy and ethical issues.
Understanding the impact of IT
IT has become more important in this day, it is an easy
way and common way to communicate to other people.
Individuals
In this day people can work at home, do thing like
shopping online, find something that you
interested in, play games, listening to music or watch films so they do not
need to travel to work or do some shopping. What happened is, people do not have to travel to work so
they can work at home and spend more time with family.
Communities
People can communicate to each other easier by using IT for
example people in the same community create a blog on social networks for
example Facebook or Twitter and share information or news about their community
so they know what is happening in their area. It is an easy and quickest way to
communicate to many people in the same time.
People use IT more and more
and sometimes they use it too much. They talk to each other less than they used
to. They spend too much time on the Internet and it has an effect on their
health; for example bad eyes sight, headache, backache, RSI etc. Young children
getting addicted to the Internet more and some of them might struggle with
reality because they use IT too much and do not know what is right or wrong.
The effects of IT
We all know that IT has an effect to people life a lot
and in many ways in this day. It is important to have some skills and knowledge
on how to use IT in the right way.
The economy and the way we work
IT has an effect to the way we work in this day a lot. We
complete our work easier and quicker by using IT. One of the big effect that happen
is the factory worker lose their job because the factory using more IT,
machines and technology to get the job done faster and cheaper.
Laws (copyright, data protection and computer misuse)
People using IT a lot and
they also give out their personal information on the Internet. What has
happened is they copy other people work and use it without the commission. They
stole and hack other people information by using IT. People could lose their
work or personal information easily if they have not got enough skills or
knowledge on how to use IT and protect themselves from the threats.
The Data Protection Act
is a law designed to protect personal data stored on computers or in an
organised paper filing system.
Example of information
that organisation store about their customers and staff in databases.
Names, addresses contact
information, employment history, medical conditions and credit history
The Computer Misuse Act
is designed to protect personal data from hacking, transferring or copying without
permission on a network, Internet and storage devices such as memory sticks and
DVDs. This law is also coverd about Email and chat room abuses, pornography,
financial abuses and viruses. It is mean you can not copying, transfering or
hacking other people data unless they have permission and allow you to use
their data.
The Copyright act is
designed to protect the create original pieces of work. For example books,
music, films, software and games. It is mean you can not copying, adapting, renting, selling and
lending the other people original pieces of work to the public.
Ethical issues
We use IT to communicate to
people and many things but sometimes people using IT in the bad way. For
example post something bad or inappropriate things about laws, politics and
religions on social network and share it to the public. If you have not got
enough knowledge you may get threats or get onto the trouble from using IT.
